When diagnosed with any life-threatening disease like cancer, it can certainly send a person’s life in to a tailspin. There will be a flurry of activity with a lot of new terminology, tests, and appointments, and it all can be very confusing at first. We understand that it can be scary and a time of uncertainty.
Our physicians believe that getting a second opinion is often an important step to take so that you can learn more about your disease and get different perspectives on how best to treat the cancer. It can also provide you and your family with reassurance going forward that you have been diagnosed correctly and have a plan for care going forward.
Sometimes, the results of a second opinion may be the same, but another physician may offer a different approach to treatment. It’s important for you to feel comfortable with a physician and have confidence in their abilities and judgement on how best to proceed with a treatment plan.
It is helpful if you can develop a list of questions so that you are assured that you will have all of the answers you need to make an informed decision about your care. You will feel empowered and confident, knowing that you have some control in the choosing what is best for you.
The physicians in our practice are available to provide second opinions to patients who have already been diagnosed by another provider. We do however caution to not delay starting treatment too long while searching out other opinions.
It’s important to check with your insurance provider to see if a second opinion is required, if it requires pre-authorization, and if your plan will cover the associated costs. Our financial counselors are able to assist in verifying your insurance coverage and benefits, and to let you know of any out-of-pocket expenses you will incur at the time of the visit.
